Massachusetts Hikes Through History/Virtual with Alison O’Leary

Tuesday, March 28, 2023
TIME: 7pm - 8pm LOCATION: Virtual CONTACT: Jean Hlady, 617.698.5757

Author Alison O’Leary will give a virtual program called “Hikes Through History” this evening via Zoom. This talk is about the history of the parks where we hike and recreate around Boston, along with hiking trail recommendations, tips, and inside info.  Have you ever wandered through the woods and wondered who had been there before you?  In Massachusetts, many parks and trails have been carved out of historical sites.

Ms. O’Leary, an award-winning journalist and co-author of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s guide called Best Day Hikes Near Boston, will share her favorites through this hour-long program.  Using maps and historic photos, she describes several day trip destinations with historical significance and interesting features in Massachusetts.  Special effort is made to include varying levels of difficulty (flat and easy to steep and challenging) and to include a variety of scenery.  These sites include: a former rubber factory overlooked in the woods; contributions of the Roosevelt-era Civilian Conservation Corps (CC) to our favorite parks; offbeat tales of local residents; sites of former grand estates (and tales of the owners), and much more!

Best Day Hikes Near Boston (AMC Press, c2017) is the second hiking/travel book Alison has published; her first was Inns & Adventures: A History and Exploer’s Guide to New Hampshire, Vermont, and the Berkshires, co-authored with Michael Tougias (OnCape Publishing, c2015).  Their other co-authored non-fiction books include:  Abandon Ship! (Hachette, c2023), Attacked at Sea (Macmillan, c2020), and So Close To Home: The True Stury of an American Family’s Fight for Survival in WWII.  In 2017 she won the Silver Charlie Award from the Florida Magazine Association for history writing.  For more information, her website is:
