1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
This is the Milton Public Library’s year-round reading program for babies and toddlers up to age five.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a national movement that encourages parents to bond with their children through reading together, and helps young readers develop a lifelong love of books and learning from an early age.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library, and in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Children's Summer Reading Questions
It’s an on-your-own, do-it-anywhere, totally FREE reading program for kids from kindergarten through entering grade 6 in September. Participants read any books they want, track how many minutes they read, and enter their minutes read on our website. Our 2024 theme is Read, Renew, Repeat!
Pre-registration is open now! Readers can begin logging minutes on June 13, and the last date to log your time is August 28. Need help logging minutes? Just call the Children’s Room at 617-898-4957.
By having stories read to them. Even children who are independent reader may count stories that are read to them. (Audio books also count!)
Summer Reading Challenge participants are eligible for special prize drawings during the program. If you win, we need to let you know! An email address also lets us send reminders of special events and of approaching deadlines. Contact information is never shared.
As many as you want! We recommend that every child try to read at least 20-30 minutes per day. In the past, Milton Summer Readers have read 1,000,000 minutes over the course of the summer! Can we do it again?
You may read anything you like, from anywhere you like! The choice is yours – stories, nonfiction, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks, whatever. The library will have displays of great books to read, and there are links to some suggestions below, too.
