TIME: LOCATION: Wotiz Gallery CONTACT: Micaela Soucy, 617.698.5757

During the month of August 2025, the Milton Public Library is hosting a very talented Abstract artist named Stephen Molloy in the Wotiz Gallery.  This exhibit – to be shown 8/1 through 8/31 – will include large and colorful Abstract paintings of several types.  He works with acrylic and color to “convey emotion in our beautiful and sometimes tragic world.  Layering color builds depth of emotion while shape and line composes its’ intent and directs the viewer’s eye.”  Stephen took classes in mechanical to creative drawing which planted a seed of artistic creativity.  He was not able to express this until 5 years ago when he finally retired, and had time to develop his craft.  He is a member of the Cambridge Art Association since 2022, and has had two of his paintings shown at University Place Gallery Cambridge in 2023 in two shows.  Also one of his paintings was selected for an exhibit at University Hall Gallery at U. Mass. Boston (that ran from 11/23 through 3/24) and one of his pieces was shown 9/13/24 thru 10/17/24 at University Place Gallery Cambridge.    Stephen has been actively painting with acrylic since 2019, and taking online art courses over the last few years.

With all the forms art can take, he says: “I found Abstract Expressionist Art to be the most meaningful for me.  My art takes my visual and emotional experiences and translates them into two-dimensional forms.  However, it is up to the viewers to interpret it for themselves.”     Then he continues with: “The start of a painting for me is a collection of past and current travel and life observations; my paintings take time to reveal themselves, session by session, based on the tone and focus of each of my sessions adding and subtracting elements throughout.  The names of my paintings are suggestive of my intent.  However, it is up the viewers to be stirred up or down and interpret the painting’s exposition for themselves….  My body of work explores Color and Shape and investigates how the traditional sense of creating and be stretched.”

Stephen also tells us: “Using larger-than-life scale, bold line and haphazard shape, my Color Texture driven process seeks to combine a traditional sense of form and structure with an expressionistic awareness.  The work is kinetic and full of potential.  There is a feeling of objects that have not yet fully come together, as if they are still forming.  Color, Shapes, and Line explore the concept that we are constantly evolving.  I have recently been amazed at the conversations you can have with a child around an abstract painting.  It can focus them, calm them, excite them, and free them to explore their own imagination.  What do they see and feel beyond the surface?”

There will be a free and open reception held on Wednesday, 8/6/25, from 6-8 PM in the Gallery, where you may view the exhibit and meet the artist.   The painting shown here at this entry is called: “Arcadian.”   To see more of Stephen’s paintings, you may go to his Instagram account: Instagram @stephenmolloy32674 and his direct phone number is (617) 320-7472.   Questions?  Email reference@milton.ocln.org    We hope you might stop by to enjoy some art at the MPL this month!
