Tonight there will be a free screening of the film called: “The Boys in the Boat.”  This movie, based on the book by Daniel James Brown, tells the true story of the University of Washington’s rowing team and their quest for gold at the 1936 Olympics in Germany, during Hitler’s reign.  It is a compelling and inspiring tale of resilience, determination, and the power of teamwork.  The director for this film was George Clooney and it was produced in 2023.  The length is 123 minutes and it is rated PG-13 for language.

In 1933, many young men competed for spots on the University of Washington rowing crew, but few made it.  At this time, the U.S. was right in the middle of the Great Depression.  Back then, ten million people were unemployed and roughly two miliiion were homeless.  People could barely afford to buy food, let alone pay for their educations.  So the University offered part-time campus jobs to anyone who made the rowing team, which made would-be rowers were even more motivated to try out.  The competition was high and out of 175 men who initially showed up, only 80 actually ended up competing since the others had been eliminated by a very strict and experienced coach.   This film focuses on a two students who made the team: Roger Morris and Joe Rantz.  It is an incredible tale, and we encourage you to come join us to learn more about the true story.

No signup is required so just come and enjoy a movie night at the MPL!  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
