During the month of May, an exhibit by painter Garcia Thompson will be displayed in the Wotiz Gallery, featuring his illustrations for the recently published children’s book My Sleep Recipe by Dr. Judith Owens and Nancy Rothstein. Designed for children ages four to eight, the book provides families with practical ways to talk about sleep while reinforcing routines that support healthy development.

In developing My Sleep Recipe, the goal was to represent families from a variety of cultures and backgrounds working together to support healthy sleep while navigating everyday challenges. The book introduces the RESTED framework, which highlights key principles of healthy sleep: Routine and regularity, environment, screens, timing, expectations, and duration. Through engaging characters and vibrant illustrations, the story helps children and caregivers explore these ideas together while encouraging simple family activities that promote better sleep habits.

About the Artist

Garcia Thompson is a Jamaican born artist who immigrated to the US as a child at the age of 13. He has always had a love for the arts ever since he was a young boy. As a young child in church his mother would give him a pen and a paper to keep him entertained during worship services.

Garcia kept his interest in the arts all the way up to high school where he attended Madison Park Technical Vocational high. While in high school, he focused on art in the commercial  design department, and developed his skills in graphic design, illustration and fine art painting. After excelling in the program, he obtained a scholarship to the Massachusetts College of Art where he focused his studies in Illustration and graduated with a BFA in Art and Design. While in school, he worked part time at the Museum of Fine Arts where he was exposed to and inspired on a daily basis by the works of some of the great master painters in history such as: Vincent van Gogh, Monet, Pablo Picasso and many others. Two artists that inspire his work today are Justin Bua and Frank Morrison. You can find similarities to these artists work in their expressive use of bold colors and urban subject matter.

Over the years Garcia has entered and won several art competitions and shows and has had his work displayed in some prestigious places. Some of the most notable are the Museum of Fine Arts black history month art expo called “Black Expressions” 2020, and The Artist Studio at Patriots Place Foxborough. He has also received honorable mention in the New Yorker magazine cover competition.

To date he is a 5 times published children’s book illustrator and was honored to worked with Dr. Judy Owens and Nancy Rothstein the sleep ambassador, on his most recent project to develop and illustrate a children’s book for the Boston Children’s Hospital Neurology department sleep study research program called “My Sleep Recipe”. The book was featured last month at the World Sleep DAY 2026 hosted by the World Sleep Society.
